
The Health Ministry has doubled the duration of housemanship. Previously, the duration was only one year in three compulsory disciplines in either the disciplines below:
1. General medicine
2. Paediatrics
3. Surgery & Medicine
4. Surgery
5. Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G)
Now it is compulsory for the medical graduates to be trained in six compulsory disciplines:

1. General medicine
2. Paediatrics
3. Surgery
4. Orthopaedics
5. O&G
6. Emergency medicine
For each discipline, the posting is in 4 months.
Director-General of Health, Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said a recent study in 28 general hospitals revealed that 67.8% of trainee doctors found their training stressful and 53% had thought of quitting due to the stress.
